Council and official guidance

Placement and waste rules in Auckland

Rules differ between councils. Link directly to the current official source for each covered area.

Auckland Transport — bin placement & road-corridor permits

Place your skip on your own property (driveway or off-street) wherever possible. If it must go on the berm, footpath edge or road, that's public land in the road corridor — Auckland Transport manages it and you may need approval (a Corridor Access Request) for public access and safety. Skips can't be placed on footpaths, and a minimum 500mm clearance is required around fire hydrants and utility covers (water, gas, telecommunications). We'll help position the bin correctly at delivery.

Auckland Council — refuse transfer stations

Auckland Council is the region's unitary authority. Household and general waste, green waste, scrap metal and hazardous items can be dropped at Council transfer stations and resource recovery parks — including Waitākere Resource Recovery Park (Henderson), the North Shore Refuse & Recycling Transfer Station (Rosedale), East Tāmaki, Pikes Point (Onehunga), Patiki Road (Avondale), Wiri, Papakura, Pukekohe and Silverdale. Check each station's accepted items and hours first. A hired skip is simpler once you have more than a car-boot load.

Auckland Council — green waste, cleanfill & inorganic collection

Green waste is accepted at most transfer stations and at Auckland's community recycling centres. Cleanfill is natural material only — clay, gravel, rock and uncontaminated soil; hardfill and heavy loads (concrete, brick, tile, soil) are charged by weight, so tell us if your load is heavy. Auckland Council also runs an annual inorganic collection for ratepayers, picking up bulky items from inside the property boundary — a skip suits renovation, garden or clean-up loads that won't wait for the collection.

Regional questions

Auckland skip bin FAQs

Do I need a permit to put a skip bin on the road or berm in Auckland?

If the bin fits on your property — a driveway or off-street area — no permit is needed. If it has to go on the berm or road, that's Auckland Transport's road corridor and you may need approval (a Corridor Access Request) for public safety. Skips can't sit on footpaths, and we keep clear of fire hydrants and utility covers. We'll advise on the best placement at delivery.

What can I put in an Auckland skip bin?

General household clean-ups, renovation waste, timber, furniture and garden waste are fine. Heavy loads — concrete, brick, tile and soil (hardfill) — are charged by weight, so let us know. We can't take hazardous items: asbestos, chemicals, paint, gas bottles, batteries or liquids. If you're unsure, ask us before you book.

How long can I keep the skip bin?

Standard hire covers several days, which suits most home and garden projects. If you need longer, just call us on 0800 449 197 and we'll arrange an extension.

Do you take green waste in Auckland?

Yes — green-waste-only skips (branches, prunings, leaves and grass) are available and priced for lighter garden loads. Auckland's transfer stations and community recycling centres also accept green waste if you'd rather drop it off yourself.

How quickly can you deliver a skip bin in Auckland?

Often the next working day, and sometimes same day depending on the operator and your suburb. Enter your delivery postcode above to see live availability and dates for your address.
